The Mestalla is the home of Valencia CF. Just a heads up before we dive into this one, if you aren't a football fan this blog might not be for you. However, it could be a good way to earn brownie points with your other half or impress your new football crazy date! Or if none of these apply to you... maybe just click on one of my other blogs and carry on reading more about Valencia.
As a football fan you might be thinking, Valencia... why would I go on a tour of their stadium, they are always struggling in La Liga and they are not even in the Europa League. But before Gary Neville thought he was the next Alex Ferguson, and sent them down the league quicker than an English summer. They won 6 La Ligas, 7 Copa Del Reys and a Uefa Cup. They are a team with great history, maybe they are like the Liverpool of Spain.
The Mestalla has a capacity of 55,000 people which is huge!! It is the 4th biggest Stadium in La Liga. This is crazy to think, when they are nowhere near being the 4th best team in La Liga.
The main reason why Valencia won a lot of silverware back in the day is because of the great players they used to have. Players like David Silva, Juan Mata, Jordi Alba, David Villa, Isco... The list is huge! Granted a lot of these players have played out the best parts of their careers at different clubs.
But in my opinion the two best players are Mario Kempes and Pablo Aimar respectively. Mostly because of how influential they were. They both played for Valencia for a long time and helped the team achieve the silverware they have today. Both of these players have sections explaining and honoring them for their contribution to the football club at certain points during the tour. They are very interesting and in depth, I also learnt a lot about them, as I have never really followed Valencia CF closely.
It is very easy to get tickets for a tour at the Mestalla. You can buy them at the gate for €10.60 for an adult which is not too bad for one of the biggest stadiums in Spain. They are open 9am–2pm, and closed at 2pm–4pm for siesta! Then re-open until 7pm. If you want more information click here. Enjoy the stadium and take in all the history.
